PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan (PT KPB) organized the Inter-High School Quiz Competition as part of the 2025 National Occupational Safety and Health (K3) Month commemoration. The event, held at Banua Patra Hall on Friday (21/02), aimed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the energy industry and workplace safety as part of an investment in creating excellent human resources ready to compete in the future.
A total of 16 teams from various high schools in Balikpapan City and Penajam Paser Utara Regency participated in this competition. The competition was divided into two rounds: the preliminary round and the final. In the initial stage, participants were grouped into four groups, each consisting of four teams. The winners from each group then advanced to the final round to compete for the championship title.
After a tight competition, MAN 1 Balikpapan emerged as the first-place winner, followed by SMKN 2 Balikpapan in second place and SMAN 9 Balikpapan in third place.
VP of Project Quality Assurance at PT KPB, Mayapati, emphasized in his speech that, “This competition is not just about winning or losing, but also about learning and having an unyielding spirit. If there are questions that cannot be answered today, take them as motivation to keep learning and expanding your knowledge,” he said.
Similarly, VP of HSSE at PT KPB, Defrinaldo, added that this event also served as a platform for students to build networks and gain deeper insights into the industry. “Today, they may compete as opponents, but in the future, they could become colleagues in the energy industry. This activity not only broadens their knowledge but also strengthens the relationship between education and the industry,” he stated.
The competition received a positive response from both participants and supporters. Salsabila Ratu Ayu Setiawan from MAN 1 Balikpapan expressed that the event was highly beneficial and expanded her knowledge. “The competition was exciting and challenging. We learned a lot about the refinery industry and the importance of workplace safety. Thank you to Pertamina for this valuable experience,” she said.
A similar sentiment was shared by Muhammad Akbar Indra Putra from SMAN 9 Balikpapan. “Besides increasing our knowledge, this competition also gave us the opportunity to learn more about the working world, especially in the energy and K3 industries,” he stated.
As part of the National K3 Month celebration, this activity also served as PT KPB's effort to strengthen ties with educational institutions and to socialize the Balikpapan and Lawe-Lawe Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) projects to students in the company's operational area.
As a company committed to the development of national human resources, PT KPB believes that educating the younger generation about the energy industry and workplace safety is an essential investment in creating a competitive workforce.
VP of Legal & Relations at PT KPB, Asep Sulaeman, emphasized that this activity aligns with the government’s program to enhance national competitiveness. “Through this competition, we hope that more young people will gain a deeper understanding of the energy industry and workplace safety. This is part of our support for the President of Indonesia’s Asta Cita vision, particularly in human resource development and improving national competitiveness,” he concluded.
With a spirit of education, safety, and innovation, PT KPB continues its efforts to develop a young generation that is ready to compete and contribute to Indonesia’s progress.
