Six Years of Establishment, PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan becomes a Pillar of Future Energy

PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan (PT KPB) commemorated its 6th Anniversary on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, by holding a Townhall Meeting attended by the Board of Directors, Board of Commissioners, and hundreds of PT KPB Officers in the Hallway of PT KPB's New Site Office (NSO) Building. With the theme “Becoming a Pillar of Future Energy”, reflecting the transformation of PT KPB as an important pillar in providing national energy security and sustainability.

President Director of PT KPB, Bambang Harimurti, said that this anniversary is a momentum to remember the company's early foundations and celebrate the collective dedication of all KPB people. “Carrying the theme Becoming a pillar of future energy, which is a true reflection of our journey - from foundation to achievement. Six years of relentless dedication, to bring a cleaner, more efficient and sustainable energy future to the country,” said Bambang.

In its journey, PT KPB faces great challenges in the construction of refineries that are not simple. Since its establishment on May 7, 2019, the establishment of PT KPB is part of the National Strategic Project (PSN) where Pertamina was assigned to develop and operate an oil refinery in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, based on the decision of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia. “Thanks to the cooperation, perseverance, and commitment of all KPB people, today we stand tall as an increasingly strong and strategic entity,” Bambang added.

After the Townhall session, the activity continued with the board greeting agenda entitled “Ngobras-Ngobrol Bareng Santai”, a two-way discussion forum between the BoD and BoC with hundreds of PT KPB officers who attended. This session is a forum for conveying aspirations, strengthening collaboration, and joint reflection on the strategic role of all KPB people in facing future challenges.

Throughout 2024-2025, PT KPB recorded a number of important milestones in supporting the completion of the Balikpapan and Lawe-Lawe RDMPs. These achievements include the completion of Plant Stop Revamp, Ready for Start Up for CDU-IV Preflash unit, Instrument Air/Plant Air (IA/PA), Gas Turbine Generator C/D, Cooling Tower Utility, as well as 20 “Transfer Line Pipe and HCU A/B/C unit. In addition, PT KPB also successfully carried out the firing of Boiler A, commissioned the new Sea Water Intake, and scored the first crude oil in Single Point Mooring (SPM) 320,000 DWT and subsea 52” Unloading Line which are all key infrastructure in the distribution and capacity increase of the refinery.

The Balikpapan RDMP project has three main objectives, increasing refinery processing capacity from 260 thousand barrels per day (kbpd) to 360 kbpd, improving product quality from EURO II standards to EURO V which is more environmentally friendly, and increasing refinery complexity to drive operational efficiency and expand product range. The completion of the Balikpapan and Lawe-Lawe RDMP Projects is expected to strengthen national energy security, sovereignty and independence.

Seiring dengan pertumbuhan perusahaan, PT KPB juga berkomitmen tumbuh berkelanjutan bersama masyarakat. Perusahaan terus mendorong penyerapan tenaga kerja lokal dan pengembangan ekonomi masyarakat sekitar. Komitmen ini diwujudkan melalui dukungan terhadap pengembangan kapasitas sumber daya manusia serta penguatan kontribusi sosial perusahaan lewat berbagai inisiatif. PT KPB berharap dapat menciptakan lebih banyak peluang kerja berkualitas dan memperkuat kontribusi perusahaan terhadap pertumbuhan ekonomi serta kesejahteraan masyarakat, khususnya di Kota Balikpapan.

Proyek RDMP Balikpapan dan Lawe-Lawe yang saat ini tengah berlangsung, juga memberikan dampak positif terhadap perekonomian daerah, terutama pada sektor penginapan, penyediaan makanan, pemberdayaan vendor lokal, serta layanan pendukung lainnya bagi ribuan pekerja proyek yang dikelola oleh PT KPB.

In terms of safety and sustainability performance, PT KPB recorded the achievement of 100 million safe working hours without Lost Time Injury (LTI), and set a MURI record for the most simultaneous floor cleaning by oil and gas facility workers. In addition, the company won various prestigious awards such as Top Zero Accident and WISCA Award Level-4 Gold from the World Safety Organization, The Downstream Energy Project of the Year from the Gulf Energy Information Excellence Awards 2024, and awards for successful project financing such as Asia Pacific Petchem Deal of the Year from the PFI Awards 2023 and Corporate Trust Mandate from The Asset Triple A Sustainable Infrastructure Awards 2024. PT KPB also received the Balikpapan Investment Award, an award from the East Kalimantan Provincial Government for its HIV/AIDS prevention program, and recognition from PT SMI for its environmental and social management performance.

In this 6th anniversary series, PT KPB also held social and environmental programs as a form of corporate responsibility to the community and the surrounding environment. “There will be 6 main activities that will be carried out, namely KPB Green, KPB Cares for the Environment, KPB Healthy with the Community through joint circumcision programs and SADARI (early detection of breast cancer), KPB Educated, and KPB Empowered,” said Asep Sulaeman, VP Legal & Relations of PT KPB.
