Realizing the Asta Cita Mission: Human Resource Development, Pertamina Balikpapan Refinery Workers Compete in Occupational Safety and Health Knowledge through a Quiz Competition.

PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan (KPB) held a Quiz Competition as part of the 2025 National Occupational Safety and Health (K3) Month. The event took place at the Garden Area of the New Site Office Building of PT KPB on Thursday (02/13) and was attended by non-HSSE employees of PT KPB as well as contractor workers. This competition served as a platform to test participants’ agility in thinking and speed in answering questions related to Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) aspects, as well as Pertamina’s business insights.

A total of 16 teams participated in the competition, which was conducted in two main stages: the preliminary round and the final round. In the preliminary stage, four teams competed in four groups using a knockout system, leaving the best teams to advance to the final. The competition aimed to assess employees' understanding of HSSE aspects while also serving as a refresher on workplace safety knowledge. This aligns with PT KPB’s commitment to prioritizing occupational safety and health in the refinery development project.

Attended by the Directors and Management of PT KPB, the event was officially opened by the Manager of Project Interface & Integration at PT KPB, Umar Heru Setiadi, who emphasized that workplace safety is a shared responsibility. “It is essential for each of us to understand and be aware of K3 aspects. What needs to be noted is that Safety is Everybody’s Business. K3 is not just the responsibility of HSSE personnel, but of everyone who wants to stay safe and has the right and responsibility for K3,” he stated.

After an intense competition, the quiz was won by the UTL Strong Team from the System Completion Function, defeating the Propylene Team representing the System Completion Function and the Complicated Relation Team representing the Communication & Stakeholder Relations Function, who secured second and third place, respectively. Additionally, each team’s supporters had the chance to win the Best Supporter competition, with the title awarded to the DHT HMU Supporters from the System Completion Function.

“It was an excellent experience, very exciting and enjoyable to meet people from other functions. We also got to learn more about K3,” said Amran from the UTL Strong Team after winning the competition.

Similarly, Rizal from the Propylene Team also expressed appreciation for the event, which is held annually. “It feels refreshing, helping us rebuild our knowledge about work experiences, HSSE aspects, and more,” he said.

VP Legal & Relations of PT KPB, Asep Sulaeman, stated that this quiz competition serves as an educational strategy and a means to internalize a safety culture within PT KPB. “Congratulations to the winners. We hope that through this event, awareness and concern for HSSE among all employees will continue to grow, fostering a safe and sustainable work environment for everyone,” he concluded.

As the manager of the National Strategic Project (PSN) Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) for Balikpapan and Lawe-Lawe, PT KPB remains committed to managing refinery development projects in accordance with world-class HSSE standards. This aligns with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises' initiative to support President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita program in strengthening human resource development. With strong HSSE implementation, it is expected to accelerate project completion, ensuring national energy security and self-sufficiency.
