As part of its commitment to cultivate work safety in every line, PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan (KPB) continues to campaign for the Personal Risk Assessment (KARIB) program, a work safety culture program that has become part of the daily lives of workers at the Balikpapan RDMP Project and Lawe-Lawe since its launch in July 2023.
President Director of PT KPB, Bambang Harimurti, emphasized that safety is about caring for others and oneself. “We want every worker to return home safely, in good health, and able to reunite with their families,” he said.
Through an approach that is easy to understand and relevant to field activities, the campaign educates workers to recognize and manage the risks that are closest to them. Workers are invited to always pay attention to their fingers to avoid injury when using tools or touching work materials, maintain body position in ergonomic conditions to avoid fatigue and potential muscle injury, and continue to be aware of work environment conditions so as not to get caught in dangerous situations that might be missed.
“KARIB is a simple and easy to convey reminder that every small safe action has a big impact on the sustainability of the project and our lives,” Bambang added.
This activity is consistently delivered in various daily forums such as Toolbox Meeting (TBM), Daily Early Morning Meeting (DEMM), Pre Job Safety Meeting (PJSM), Posko Kita Semua Healing “Poskamling”, and other cross-functional meetings. The campaign is also reinforced with safe working simulation sessions and interactive quizzes, where workers who are able to re-explain the material are given appreciation in the form of rewards. The HSSE function continues to encourage the involvement of all workers through the active role of champions in the field who become role models in the implementation of safety culture.
As a campaign reinforcement, the KARIB jargon is also echoed regularly “Check Your Fingers - This is My Finger! Check Your Body Position - Safe, Safe! Check your surroundings - Secure, Secure!”.
The KARIB program is part of 12 sustainable culture programs implemented by PT KPB in the project environment. The entire program is designed to shape a safe, positive, and humanist work culture, as well as strengthen the active role of each individual in creating a sustainable and highly resilient work environment.
“Cultural programs like KARIB show that safety education can be done with a light approach but with a big impact. The key is in the consistency of delivery and active involvement of the entire team,” said Asep Sulaeman, VP Legal & Relations of PT KPB.
PT KPB as the National Strategic Project manager continues to oversee the completion of the Balikpapan and Lawe-Lawe Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) Projects. This project aims to increase the processing capacity of the Balikpapan Refinery, produce environmentally friendly products, and increase refinery complexity to improve operational efficiency and expand product range. In line with the project completion target, PT KPB also ensures that every stage of work is accompanied by a strong safety culture that is embedded in individual behavior. KARIB is present as a reminder that safety starts from oneself and becomes the main foundation in the protection of all workers in the field.
