On the 80th anniversary of Indonesia's independence, PT KPB makes history with the first catalyst input at the Residue Processing Unit

Monday, 18 August 2025

PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan (KPB) has made a new achievement by carrying out the first catalyst input at the Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC) unit. The activity took place at the RFCC complex, coinciding with the 80th Anniversary of Indonesia's Independence Day. Catalyst is a special material used to accelerate the oil processing process at the refinery. The loading of catalyst into the hopper is a crucial step before the RFCC unit is started up for the first time (initial startup).

This catalyst loading is referred to as a major milestone as it signifies the readiness of the RFCC unit. This unit will play a crucial role in processing heavy crude oil into high-value products such as gasoline and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). With the successful completion of this stage, PT KPB is one step closer to operationalizing the RFCC. This will support national energy independence as the refinery can produce more high-quality products.

Notably, this activity was carried out in conjunction with the 80th Anniversary of Indonesia's Independence Day. The spirit of independence symbolizes that the Indonesian nation is capable of standing on its own feet, including in the energy sector.

PT KPB President Director Bambang Harimurti expressed his appreciation for the hard work of the entire team. “I am confident that all of this work is the result of our collective contribution. However, we must always prioritize our gratitude to Allah SWT. This is because I believe that our hard work will not bring blessings if it is not accompanied by gratitude to Him,” he said.

The RFCC unit, which will soon be operational, has a processing capacity of approximately 90,000 barrels per day (KBPD). RFCC technology can increase the added value of crude oil residues into high-value products, while also producing LPG, gasoline, and propylene. With the operation of this unit, the Balikpapan Refinery will strengthen its position as a pillar of national energy security.

This achievement is also in line with the Asta Cita, particularly the third goal regarding economic independence based on clean and sustainable energy, and the sixth goal regarding equitable regional development. The presence of RFCC not only strengthens national energy supply but also opens opportunities for regional economic growth through increased industrial activity, job creation, and multiplier effects for the surrounding community.

In addition to technical achievements, PT KPB and PT KPI Balikpapan Unit also held an independence day commemoration ceremony at the PT KPI Balikpapan Unit Headquarters compound. The ceremony was conducted solemnly and attended by management, workers, and business partners.

As part of the event, PT KPB and PT KPI Balikpapan Unit distributed aid to eight Child and Elderly Welfare Institutions (LKSA & LKS-LU). The assistance was provided to LKSA Amanah Ummat, LKSA Ummi Zahro, LKSA Al Furqon, LKS-LU Bhakti Abadi, LKSA Darul Asri, LKSA Nurul Iman, LKSA KORPRI Manuntung, and LKSA Ainun Salsabila.

It is hoped that this assistance will alleviate the operational needs of the LKSA and provide new hope for the children. This activity is part of the company's social responsibility towards the community.

Vice President (VP) of Legal and Relations at PT KPB, Asep Sulaeman, emphasized that this Independence Day celebration aligns with the company's commitment to achieving national energy independence. “Today, we are not only commemorating independence but also marking a significant step toward energy independence. We believe that through hard work and gratitude, every achievement will bring blessings to us all,” said Asep.

The series of activities on Independence Day serve as a reminder that energy development cannot be separated from the spirit of nationalism. This year's independence anniversary theme, “United and Sovereign, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia,” motivates PT KPB to continue contributing to maintaining national energy security and improving the welfare of the community.
