Alert and Responsive! The RDMP Balikpapan First Aid Competition Tests Workers' Preparedness for Emergencies.

Monday, 17 February 2025

Workplace accidents can happen at any time, and the first few seconds of response can determine a person's safety. As a proactive measure to prevent fatal risks in project environments, PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan (PT KPB) organized the First Aid Competition as part of the 2025 National Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Month.

This competition serves as a real-life simulation that tests workers' responsiveness in handling emergency situations. With the right skills, every worker can act as the first responder before medical teams arrive on-site.

A total of 12 teams, consisting of workers and contractors, participated in the competition, which began with a refresher workshop on February 12, 2025, at the Lobby of the New Site Office (NSO) Building of PT KPB. This workshop equipped participants with essential first aid skills crucial for saving lives in emergencies. The competition then took place on February 13, 2025, at the Courtyard of the Modification Site Office (MSO) Building of PT KPB.

Asep Sulaeman, VP of Legal & Relations at PT KPB, emphasized that preparedness for emergencies should become a workplace culture in project environments. "Every second counts in an emergency. This workshop and competition aim to build preparedness and first aid skills among non-medical workers. We hope that all PT KPB officers and contractor colleagues can instill a sense of awareness, alertness, and responsiveness in dealing with critical situations on-site," Asep stated.

In this competition, each team faced two case scenarios—trauma and non-trauma—which had to be handled within 10 minutes. The assessment was based on accuracy, speed, and team coordination in providing first aid. To ensure objective evaluation, judges from Pertamina Panorama Hospital were involved, further strengthening synergy among Pertamina’s subsidiaries.

After going through rigorous challenges requiring precision and teamwork, the NGP First Aider Team from the System Completion Function emerged as the first-place winner, outperforming the RFCC KPB Team from the same function and the Prima No Limit Team from the PAR Function, who secured second and third places, respectively. Additionally, the Best Leader award was given to Candra Saputra from the NGP Team.

"Thank you to the board of directors, management, committee, and all participating teams. I hope this event continues and helps everyone refresh and improve their skills as first aiders," Candra expressed his appreciation after the event.

This first aid competition has become an annual agenda in PT KPB’s National OHS Month, reinforcing PT KPB’s commitment to fostering a strong safety culture in the project environment.

"Thank you to the trainers and mentors who have provided us with valuable insights on first aid," said Rina, a representative from the JO Team, sharing her positive impression of the event.

As the manager of the National Strategic Project (PSN) Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) Balikpapan and Lawe-Lawe, PT KPB remains committed to managing refinery development projects in accordance with world-class HSSE standards. This aligns with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises' initiative to support President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita program, which focuses on strengthening human resource development. With robust HSSE implementation, the project is expected to accelerate completion and contribute to national energy security and independence.
